The I. stage of non-invasive IR-examination competed

Within the framework of task No. 4-5 non-invasive examination of Medieval mural paintings and chancel stalls were performed. The examination consisted first of all on specialists’ documentation in near IR and on its incisive analysis. The range of registered wavelength is determined by the IR filter. Depending on its type it is possible to examine surfaces in radiation bands of 730–1000 nm, 780–1000 nm, 840–1000 nm, 900–1000 nm and higher. For the purpose of the project the IR 1000 nm was applied. The analysis and documentation in near IR is very useful for registration of details undetectable in visible light (VIS). Observation and documentation of historic artefact using that method allows to locate old retouching (particularly in lighter areas, painted with lead white), infills and additions. The method is also very useful for documenting underdrawings that appear beneath thin paint layers (however only in cases when they were executed wit media giving a good contrast). Artefacts for the research have been selected and the research was performed by Juliusz Raczkowski PhD (Qual.), in cooperation with Monika Jakubek-Raczkowska PhD (Qual.).
